Melbourne's second last engagement of the season was against one of the only two sides below them on the ladder, and they ran away to an easy victory. They conceded the first goal, but kicked the last four of the term against a rattled side lacking teamwork. Even when Hawthorn had chances they missed them due to poor forward play, and went into quarter time nearly three goals down.
Hawthorn improved in the second term, with one playing going so hard that even when his shorts were torn off he played in red bathers until replacements arrived, but were unable to add anything more than three behinds. Melbourne had trouble with the Hawthorn defence, but eventually overwhelmed them to the tune of five goals.
Drastic positional changes at half time didn't help the Mayblooms, and at one point in the third quarter they were behind 12 goals to one. While they staged a belated recovery but it only to stop them from avoiding a three figure defeat. The margin was almost 50 at the last change, and three late Hawthorn goals helped keep the final result to just over 10 goals.
Alby Rodda, Don Cordner and Ted Cordner were best. Hewson was an unused 19th man.
