With the first six goals of the day Melbourne powered to a seemingly match-winning lead at quarter time. They got out to a 51 point lead in the third quarter against injury-ravaged opposition, before a late fightback almost delivered an amazing come from behind victory for Richmond.
In a dominant first quarter, the Demons had 106 disposals to 69, barely letting their opponents get near the ball. By half-time they had nearly twice as many inside 50s.
The much improved Tigers drew to 35 points behind at the last break before launching an all-out assault which got them to within two points late in the game. The two sides had already played out a thriller in Round 1 and this was no different - a late goal by Guy Rigoni from a questionable David Schwarz 'handball' sealed the points for Melbourne. Despite Richmond having added eight goals to three after half-time they also kicked 13 behinds to waste their chance of a remarkable win.
Best were White and Nicholson. Matthew Whelan was fined $1200 for wrestling and Tiger Paul Broderick was reported for attempting to eye-gouge Schwarz. Steven Febey didn't play the second half after injuring his knee.
Neale Daniher said "We played good footy early. We played really well in the first half, they are a good side, they came back at us, we were able to keep composure and win the game."
