ImageAfter struggling to beat bottom of the ladder Brisbane Round 18, 1990 a week earlier, Melbourne met the league's other problem interstate club and finally registered a confidence boosting win - handing Sydney their 11th defeat in a row.

Despite losing five players through injury Melbourne were the better team from the first bounce, kicking nine of the 13 goals scored in the first quarter despite conceding the first of the match.

Ricky Jackson continued his sparkingly form which had seen him boot four in the win over Brisbane the previous week by kicking six. He was ably supported by Darren Bennett as they put the hapless Swans to the sword and racked up Melbourne's 9th highest score in VFL/AFL football.

Best were Jackson, Healy and Eishold. Matthew Mahoney was reported for striking on debut but found not guilty.

John Northey said: "That is the most I have been satisfied in a long time, and what makes it better is having so many seniors players out. We played four good quarters and, even though they are near the bottom, we crushed a side, which we haven't done for a while."
