As the Demons stumbled to the end of a disappointing season, they'd spent the week embroiled in speculation about a merger with . The story had been broken in the Sunday Herald-Sun by former Dee Gerard Healy a day after their Round 21 loss to Essendon. Healy's claims were denied by both Richmond President Neville Crowe and his Melbourne counterpart Ian Ridley.
