Having won their first two games of the season, just one shy of their total for the whole of <1969>, the football world was talking up the Demons as having rearrived, especially when Paul Rowlands thrashed the dangerous Peter Hudson during the Demons win over Hawthorn a week before.

The optimism lasted a few minutes into the clash at Arden Street, and against a side who had been defeated twice already that season Melbourne were blown away. Elsewhere Waverley was being played on for the first time, but at North Melbourne the fortunes of the two sides were about to start going in opposite directions.

The Demons were killed in the centre of the ground, and despite a brave performance by the backline they were swamped in the avalanche of attack that North were putting on in front of their own fans.

Ray Carr was the only bright spot for the Demons, kicking his side's last seven goals of the game. John Townsend had gotten the first within thirty seconds, but then it was up to Carr to do the rest of the work from there. His feat was one of the few times in league history that a player has racked up more than five goals and kicked all his side's goals but one, and is Melbourne's highest ever score with just two goalkickers.

Best were Carr, Davis and Jones. Osborne and Clark were replaced by Jennings and Feldmann respectively during the last quarter.

Peter Keenan was reported for striking and suspended for two games.
