In front of what was described as "the biggest crowd that has witnessed a football match in years" Melbourne suffered their first loss of the season. Fitzroy were fielding their best team of the year, with two of their best players returning from cricketing duties.

Fitzroy's clever passing game was the difference throughout the day even though scores were low and the two sides only had one goal apiece at half time. Despite the low scoring it was a fast match where the umpire erred on the side of leniency to let the match flow.

The home side's defenders were the main difference, keeping Melbourne at bay for most of the day and only allowing one goalscorer for the day. The reds had been handicapped by having their best player Fred McGinis play after having been ill all week, and he was down on his rgular form.

Best were Davey, Moodie and Wood.

Notes
The Argus claims that one of the Melbourne players was "an old player under a new name" who was previously known as Norman. He may have been Frank Staines, but Staines played two games before his.
