St Kilda continued their run of outs, remaining without a win in senior competition. Both sides were missing several players - with Herring, Moodie, Moriarty and Moysey absent for the Reds - and while the mud and slush cancelled out some of their advantage the heavier Melbourne players were still too good.
The home side had much of the general play, and if their forwards could have converted chances they might have won their first game. Both sides played better against the wind during the day.
In the last quarter, which started with Melbourne just five points in front, St Kilda continuously attacked but couldn't convert chances. They left Melbourne break through their line three times for the quarter and on two of these occasions the visitors got a crucial goal.
Best were Wood, Sowden and Elliot.
