Coming off a heavy loss against Essendon a week earlier, took out their frustrations on a home side that didn't turn up to play in the first half.

The Reds were considered to be in with a chance after a fighting loss against Richmond while the Roys were being beaten badly, but having won just two matches against Fitzroy in a decade their poor streak would continue.
Even a good run with the umpires, including five free kicks in a row to Bill Allen during the first quarter, didn't help Melbourne. After a strong start to the season Melbourne were now suffering a reality check. A shower that fell shortly before the match also hampered them, while Fitzroy played to the conditions far better - with Merrick kicking four of his nine goals in the opening term. In reply, Melbourne managed just one point. They got their first of the game through Huntington early in the second quarter, but it was their only major for the half.

Melbourne struck back in the second half, stemming the tide in the third quarter and winning the last but they had done themselves too much damage by conceding 10 goals to one in the first half. The home side were rattled in the first quarter and put away in the second. After a fine performance on a dry ground against Richmond they were all at sea in the wet.

For the second consecutive week an opposition player lost his shorts on the Melbourne ground, but at least Stan Molan got a goal out of it after he was adjudged to have been held unfairly. For the second week in a row the match ended in near darkness.

Harker, Allen and Corbett were best. Odgers kept dangerous Fitzroy forward Merrick to one goal in the second half after he'd booted eight in the first two quarters.
