Needing a win to keep themselves in the hunt for finals, Melbourne had to overcome their record of not beating in a home and away game for nearly 12 seasons. They made things difficult for themselves, giving up a three goal lead at the last change before recovering to hit the front late before being beaten.

kicked with the wind in the first quarter, but only set up a 10 point lead. The home side was no better in the second term, and the teams were level at the long break. On the first Saturday of the season when winter conditions affected play, the second half was played in falling rain. Melbourne was a better wet weather side, and held champion goalkicker Gordon Goventry to two goals, but the visitors built a three goal lead at the last break by crowding the play. Melbourne surprised them in the final term, running them off their feet and taking a four point lead with a minute left. Then, after doing all the hard work to get back in the game they were beaten by a ball which was kicked out of a scramble and rolled through an unguarded goal.

Best were La Fontaine, Roberts and Young.

Collingwood climbed to top spot, while defeat left Melbourne in ninth place, two games out of the four.
