Having lost four games in a row, and a week after kicking their lowest score in 20 years on an Arden Street mudheap, the Demons were desperate to get back in the winner's circle. They did so at the expense of a disappointing St Kilda side.
The Saints had blown a lead against Richmond the week before, and continued their poor form into the first quarter. They had a pace advantage early, but couldn't get past a strong Demon defence. Melbourne then took over, kicking the first two goals and replying to St Kilda's only major of the term with three more.
Melbourne welcomed backed Norm Smith from injury and were rewarded for moving him to full-forward by a five goal haul.
Best were Norm Smith, Donald Cordner and Fred Fanning. Unused 19th and 20th men were Byfield and Bowman. Roy Stabb and Alby Rodda were reported for striking and attempted striking respectively, and were suspended for four matches each.
