After 101 games with Footscray between <1930> and <1935>, McKay joined Brunswick as playing coach from <1936> to <1940>. There he won a premiership in <1938> and made two other grand finals before joining Melbourne as Seconds coach from <1945> to <1947>.

In <1948> he moved to coaching the , remaining in charge through <1956>. Seconds coach from <1956> to <1958> and again in both <1962> and <1963> and then from <1966>. He was also the inaugural coach of the in <1953>.

His nephew Ken played for the in the early 1950s while he was coach, and his son Noel played in <1957> and <1958>.
