The son of George Bickford was recruited to the Under 19s in <1978> and graduated to the seniors two seasons later.
Despite being named the best rookie at the club that year he failed to take the next step during the <1981> disastrous season and played just six games that year before his VFL career ended. He sat out of football for year before joining side Prahran in <1983>, he played two years for them, then for Collegians in <1986>.
Originally elected to the board in <1999>, Bickford was re-elected for <2002> as part of Gabriel Szondy's "Team Vision" ticket with 6,694 votes. He resigned in <2008> along with Paul Gardner.
In <2015> he was named a Life Member for his long service to the club.
