"Trout" Elshaug worked his way through the in <1977>, Under 19s and to make his debut as a rover aged 19-years-old. He played for Victoria in his second season and was with the Demons for four years before walking out at the end of his contract. The club had already floated swapping him to for a player midway through <1982>.
At the end of <1983> he declared that he was disenchanted at Melbourne and wanted to move clubs. I've felt that my career is heading nowhere and I feel I can do a lot better he told The Age in November that year. He had seen his season ended by a knee injury and looked to move elsewhere where he could contend for a premiership.
Elshaug was sold to alongside Michael Young in <1984> and he played in their <1985> premiership team amongst 65 games before injuring his knee in a game late in the <1987> season. He was swapped to midway through <1988>, not playing until late in the season as he recovered from the injury, before being delisted before <1990> after another knee injury. St Kilda drafted Elshaug in the 1989 Pre-Season but he was still recovering from injury and retired two weeks after being selected. Instead, he became captain/coach of side Dandenong in <1990>, leading them to a premiership in <1991>.
In <1992> Elshaug was a regional manager for the Eastern Ranges Under 18s side, before joining North Melbourne as a full-time development coach in <1993>. He was then promoted to assistant under Denis Pagan in <1994> and remained in the job until <2002>. He followed Pagan to and was an assistant there until <2006> before joining St Kilda where remained until midway through the <2010> season. He returned to the Saints as a recruiting manager in <2011>.
Elshaug represented Melbourne in the <1980> and <1981> Grand Final Sprint, finishing third in 1981. In <1980> he played for Victoria in an exhibition game against Rest of Australia.
