Recruited in the <1941> pre-season, Lewis was already 6ft tall before his 18th birthday and impressed in trial games at centre half-back. A premiership player as a reserve in just his fourth game, the Grand Final was the defenders' first VFL finals game. He then left to fight for the army during the war before returning for four more games late in <1944>.

Lewis was cleared back to Penshurst for the <1947> season, where he remained through <1953>.

His nephew Peter Slattery was signed by Melbourne in <1966> but didn't play seniors.
