The six-foot-square colour survived a 1,100-kilometre trek during the winter of 1813 from Fredericton to Kingston to help defend Canada from American invaders and several battles during the two-year war. The restoration of this flag is expected to cost thousands of dollars. http://1812waroshawa.com/

The flag pictured above was designed by Niagara-on-the-Lake resident and graphic designer Barbara Gelb, have been installed around Niagara-on-the-Lake. The bicentennial flags are flying alongside the Union Jack and the Canadian flags.

"Badge: Gules on a Canadian pale Argent two swords in saltire proper, hilts and pommels Gules, surmounted by an anchor Or fouled Gules and flanked by two tomahawks addorsed, the whole ensigned by the Royal Crown proper and above two scrolls Or edged Gules and inscribed 1812-1815 and DEFENCE OF CANADA - D�FENSE DU CANADA in letters Sable."
"Symbolism: The banner honours those who defended British North America during the War of 1812; the Royal Navy and Provincial Marine, the British Army and colonial militias, and their First Nations allies. The three fighting elements are represented by the anchor, the swords and the tomahawks respectively.�
