INTRODUCTION
Hungarian charters from the 11th and 12th centuries name a surprisingly large number of Hungarian noblemen who bore the comital title, mainly as subscribers to the documents. The documentation identifies 29 different counties by name (see Chapter 1), although it has not yet been possible to identify the places precisely nor ensure the accuracy of the translations of the Latin place names. The information provided is insufficient to be able to reconstruct an unbroken succession list of counts in these counties, let alone any reliable family reconstruction. It is probable that succession in these named counties was hereditary, although confirmation that this speculation is correct has not been found in the primary sources. However, several cases have been identified where more than one person, presumably members of the same family although the information available is insufficient to prove this, held the same county around the same time. In addition to the named counties, numerous examples have been identified of counts who are not linked to a named area (Chapter 2). Some of the names of these unlinked counts suggest Byzantine, German, Italian and Russian origins.
Very few family links have been identified between the Hungarian comital families who are shown in the present document and the Arpd dynasty of Hungarian kings. It is supposed that this results from lack of information in the sources, and that in fact inter-marriage was probably frequent. No links at all have been found with any non-Hungarian noble families, but it is less likely that this group of nobles would have sought marriages outside of Hungary. Little information about these early Hungarian counts can be found apart from their names, as the Hungarian chronicles relating to the first couple of centuries of rule by the Arpd dynasty rarely name any Hungarian leaders apart from members of the royal family. We are left, therefore, with an unsatisfactory list of names of Hungarian noblemen with little supporting information.
Nearly all the charters consulted are signed by the comes palatii and comes curialis, two Hungarian court officials who invariably occupy the first two places in the lists of subscribers. It does not appear that the two positions were hereditary, as counts from many different named counties are recorded as holding the posts. Nor does it appear that the appointments were for life, as many cases can be found of different individuals with the same title over the same period, although the information found in the documentation is insufficient to be certain whether the appointments were in parallel or in sequence.
The legendary origin of the tribes of Hungarian nobility is recorded in the Gesta Hungarorum which states that "Hunni sive Hungari" divided into seven armies, each having 30,000 warriors and a single commander, and names "Arpad " as the most powerful of the commanders and the first to enter Pannonia[1]. The Gesta names the other six commanders:
- "Zobole [Szabolcs]", leader of the second army who settled "ubiChakwara" which "now stands in ruins", ancestor of "generatio Chak [Csk]"[2]. According to Europische Stammtafeln[3], he was related to lmos, although the precise relationship is not shown.
- "Iula", commander of the third army who settled "in partibus Erdevelu [Transylvania [Erdly]]"[4].
- "Vrs [rs]", leader of the fourth army who settled "circa flumen Soio [Saj]"[5].
- "Cund [Knd]", leader of the fifth army who settled "circa Nyr [Nyrsg region]" and his sons "Cudis [Ksid] et Cupian [Kaplony]"[6].
- "Lel [Lehel]", leader of the sixth army who first lived "circa Golgocha [Galgc]" and later "in partibus Nitri [Nitra]" after "Messianis [Moravians] et Boemis [Bohemians]" were eliminated, and was ancestor of "Zuard [Zovrd] oritur tribus"[7].
- "Werbulchu dux [Vrbulcsu]", leader of the seventh army who settled "in Zala circa Lacum Boloton [Lake Balaton]"[8].
The commentary in the edition of the _Gesta_which was consulted states that Gyula and Knd [Kende] were the titles of dignitaries rather than names[9].
The Gestis Hungarorum Liber gives a different version of the names and origin of these six other Magyar commanders[10]:
- "Eleud pater Zobolsu" [Eld, father of Szabolcs], ancestor of "genus Saac" [Csk].
- "Cunda pater Curzan".
- "Ound pater Ete", ancestors of "genus Calan et Colsoy".
- "Tosu pater Lelu".
- "Huba", ancestor of "genus Zemera".
- "Tuhutum pater Horca", whose sons were "Gyyla et Zombor" ancestors of "genus Moglout".
While there are similarities between the two versions, the differences underline the semi-legendary nature of these descriptions of the early Magyars and the fruitlessness of attempting to reconcile them.
Hungarian charters dated to the 11th and 12th centuries rarely specify whether the named noblemen were descended from these Magyar tribal ancestors. For example, none of the "genus" referred to above is named in any of the documents which have been consulted during the preparation of the present document.
