| My opinion Vreemd genoeg voor wie mij een beetje kent is dat er al minstens 2 CD's uit het dancegenre zich in mijn persoonlijke CD-top 10 van het jaar genesteld hebben: St Germain's waarlijk fantastische "Tourist", en Buscemi's "Our Girl in Havana". In een rechtstreekse vergelijking met deze Fransman moet de Limburgse knoppendraaier het wellicht in zowat alle opzichten afleggen van het jazzvernuft, maar toch, Dirk Swartenbroekx schoot een schot in de roos.TopDJ's die de plaat krijgen toegestuurd reageren zonder uitzonding enthousiast, van Italië tot Ierland en van Israël tot in eigen land zijn de plaatbesprekingen lovend ... Er heerst, niet geheel onterecht, dan ook een milde vorm van "buzz" rond deze plaat, een "buzz" die op de volgende Buscemi-release dan ook waarschijnlijk zal gesampled worden, en dan in porties van enkele seconden per keer alweer kan dienen als percussietrack voor een nieuwe song.Een deel van het materiaal op "Our Girl in Havana" (ook verkrijgbaar op 2LP's, btw) is nochtans niet nieuw : "Our Suitor" is de inzending van Dirk Swartenbroekx, toen voor het eerst met vrouwelijke zangondersteuning, in de Basstaard, een wedstrijd waarin de beste cover van het Bernthölernummer moest neergelegd worden. Ook songs als "Angel of L.A.", "First Flight to London", "La Sopa del Dia" stonden al op de EP die in mei van vorig jaar verscheen.Het precies deze eenheid in verscheidenheid die "Our Girl in Havana" tot zo'n interessante ervaring maakt : eenheid, in die zin dat het steeds gaat om op zeer sterke en zuiders geïnspireerde ritmetracks drijvende nummers gaat. Verscheidenheid, omdat de ritmes en moods variëren van lome bossa, tot knetterende breakbeats, van hete drum'n'bass tot monotone house. Het is allemaal razend knap gedaan, maar toch kan niet verhuld worden dat je nergens vergeet dat hier geen swingend batucada-gezelschap op de straat voorbij loopt te paraderen, maar wel een man uit Lommel aan knopjes en schuifjes zit te prutsen. Maar zelfs die wetenschap kan niet wegnemen dat "Spooky Samba", of "Calling All Drama Queens", of het tweede stuk van "First Flight to London", of "Ramiro's Theme" of "My Suitor" waarlijk ingenieus in elkaar zitten en aldus bijzonder meeslepend zijn.Buscemi schrijft zich hiermee trouwens in in een een soort van vreemde Belgische traditie, want ook acts zoals de Chakacha's in de jaren vijftig en zestig (Ay, que calor), en Two Man Soundin de disco jaren zeventig (Charlie Brown) wisten al iets heel origineels met Braziliaanse en andere Latino-Amerikaanse ritmes aan te vangen en op die manier een claim naar wereldroem te doen. Buscemi smokkelt deze stomende ritmes niet de popsong binnen, maar wel in de danstempels, en - hopelijk - uw cd- of platenspeler. And your opinion? Did I get it all wrong, or was I spot-on ?
