I've documented all the steps to build OpenJDK 8 on Fedora 16 here: http://coderthoughts.blogspot.com/2012/02/building-project-penrose-or-openjdk-8.html Feel free to include this in the build page http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk8/build/raw-file/tip/README-builds.html whenever that gets brought to life.

Passing STATIC_CXX="false" will also work and is preferable. This is what we do in IcedTea.
