Yes, it would be nice and there are actually already 2 RFEs covering this: 4640805: Protocol and content handlers SPI 6249864: make it easier to write custom url handlers

However this is no small task, specially considering the compatibility and security constraints. So far resources (or lack of thereof) have prevented us of working on it.
