That certainly gives some implementation flexibility, but I don't think I've ever seen it expressed as a rule. ... this is the convention for @implSpecs for default methods on interfaces. Which probably would have been used here instead of AbstractList had they existed back in JDK1.2.

However @throws is not part of implSpecs. AbstractList should have defined the potential exceptions and subclass implementations would have to conform.
