They may be changing the name to just "OS X" at some point and this change was in preparation for that potential change. This was also pushed to 7uX earlier. On 7u then I just checked jdk7u/jdk7u-dev and several tests are using startsWith("Mac OS") like we had in 8 so maybe it's not all pushed to 7u yet.
