Apple hardware soon won't support 32-bit anyway.
The issue was not Apple's hardware, but the inability of getting ahold of 64-bit drivers for 3rd-party hardware. (And the CPU can still run in 32-bit mode.)
At the moment, it is not a problem to make a Java user interface that uses JNI to talk to 32-bit libraries, by executing Java in 32-bit mode.
Taking this ability away, without warning nor consideration of the users, when the ability was there a couple of days ago (so it cannot have been that hard to support it) was all I took exception to.
In the Apple world, life moves on and Java has to as well. That has always been true.
