For ease of review, I've uploaded this suggested change as a webrev [1].

Also, I've simplified / converted / Robot-ized the test code you provided into an rtrej test, and included that with the webrev.

Please review this, and verify that it correctly demonstrates the problem you're reporting.

Also, is there an existing Java bug that covers this problem?
