Sorry, 50 hits is not "quite widely".
Not everything is known to google's code search. I'm just saying that there's code out there that uses this syntax.
Did you find any examples using a step > 1?
No, I didn't. I'm not arguing for that use case either, I'm mainly interested in the use case where step == 1.
