obviously I don't mean HP/UX threading here, as I think it's a lost cause :)

Actually, reportedly 2.2b1 builds with threads and runs the thread tests correctly on HP-UX 11.00. See

It's not clear what made this work though, so the backport may be muddy. You might try to enlist the help of the guy who reported that bug, he seems knowledgeable.
