There are few people here who understand the _sre code, so I'm not sure you'll get answers. Given how critical this code is and given that Fredrik is adamant that the code needs to continue to run with all versions of Python starting with 1.5.2, I'd rather not mess with it much in terms of adding new features. Maybe you can create your own code fork for now?
