I would characterize "fatal" as misleading, and "critical" as accurate. "Fatal" implies "death", as in process termination, or sys.exit(), or at least an exception being raised. It's an important distinction, well worth the extra 3 letters.
I expected this response, hence my (joking) use of "political correctness". I don't think the subtlety is worth using a less common word.
