I have changed permissions on /usr/local so that I don't need to be root to put things there. I found Windows to be too painful for any kind of software development, so I use it only if I need to release software, or investigate bugs that only occur on Windows (at which times it is still painful).
Clearly the position of a partisan. You're missing out on some wonderful debugging facilities. GDB et al still can't touch Visual Studio.
