Why is that? If it doesn't play nice with the latest MSVC, MinGW doesn't have a future on Windows.

I got scared by an earlier message that said something like "there is currently no free compiler that will generate extension modules for Python 2.4".

Fortunately it seems that meant no free Microsoft compiler, and doesn't include gcc.
