Could decimal be backported to 2.3 and be included in some 2.3.5? Don't know if this behaviour is common to Python.
Absolutely not. See PEP 0006. There's nothing stopping someone from making a seperate package of the decimal code (complete with setup.py) and distributing it for Python 2.3 users to download and add on. Barry does this with the email package.
