Here an extra data point. I built Python 2.3.3 with db-4.2.52 last Friday on Solaris 8 and didn't encounter any problems like this. Here's a quick check of test_anydbm:

$ python /usr/local/lib/python2.3/test/test_anydbm.py
test_anydbm_creation (__main__.AnyDBMTestCase) ... ok
test_anydbm_keys (__main__.AnyDBMTestCase) ... ok
test_anydbm_modification (__main__.AnyDBMTestCase) ... ok
test_anydbm_read (__main__.AnyDBMTestCase) ... ok
