Ah, I misunderstood. The dict/list isn't marshalled separartely; it is built up during (un)marshalling. Clever. (Pickling does a similar thing.)
Indeed; this is actually a simplified version of the pickle object sharing.
Armin suggested to remove marshal entirely and use pickle for storing compiled byte code. It works fine with the version of pickle that ships with Stackless, but is unfortunately slower than marshal.
