nbindex and index are essentially exactly as you propose. Then I don't understand why Travis is objecting against my proposal!

P.S. Just to mess up the release schedule some more, I'm going to be away from 13-19 August, so the patch either needs to be approved by Neal or Anthony in the next few days, or someone else will need to commit it before rc1.
