The slave was reported as "idle" just before I restarted the master, and "offline" after the restart. From that, I inferred that the restart broke the connection.
My box was hibernating from 03:12 to 11:54 EST today, and couldn't have responded to anything during that period.
I see. So it is rather that the master doesn't see the slaves go away.
