The usual solution is to not integrate then, at all. Python doesn't really ship with any libraries that also have an active life outside of Python. Not entirely true - we have the ones listed in PEP 360. However, I think of those only Optik (aka optparse) is currently seeing active external updates.
Hence my classification "doesn't really", which I meant to be vague.
Of course, we also have a big warning at the top of the PEP saying Never Ever Do This Again.
I think that's what Guido once said.
