Do you still reproduce it on trunk? I've tried your scripts on my machine and they work fine, even if I leave garbage collecting enabled during the process. (dual core 64-bit machine but in 32-bit mode)
I'm afraid that sometime over the last year, I replaced my computer's motherboard, and now I can't reproduce the behaviour at all. I've tried two different boxes, with both Python 2.6.1 and 2.5.1.
