Actually, the alien idea is that more than one person would use the same (Windows) computer. Not surprising as these were personal computers. It's Windows as a server OS that's the bizarre idea...
multiuser != server
I've been in a couple of organizations where PCs were shared and thus had different users logging into them. Cash registers and call centers, for example.
