I'm not persuaded because I find the arguments for 'fail*' more persuasive :-)
I am, however, convinced that the consensus of the community is that 'assert*' is the right choice. The PEP will be revised accordingly.
Nitpick: the second point is not just "precedent", there's an economic reason there too. [...]
You should mention Raymond's concern that PEP 8 names are quite a bit longer.
