I cannot explain why the unpatched version was slower than the patched one most of the times.
It just looks like measurement noise or, at worse, the side effect of slightly different code generation by the compiler. I don't think a ±1% variation on a desktop computer can be considered significant.
(which means that the patch reaches its goal of not decreasing performance, anyway :-))
