Supernova 2005cs in M51 (original) (raw)
Supernova 2005cs was discovered on June 27, 2005 by German amateur astronomer Wolfgang Kloehr as it was of mag 14 and rising, 15" west and 67" S of the center of M51. Its brightness peaked on June 30, 2005 at 13.5 and then slowly decreased to about 14.5 where it stayed almost constant until October, 2005. This supernova was classified to be of type II from the analysis of its spectrum.
The progenitor star of this supernova was identified on images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the infrared light (Maund et.al. 2005,Li et.al. 2005).
