Supernova 2008in in M61 (original) (raw)
Supernova 2008in was discovered on December 26, 2008 by Koichi Itagaki when it was at about mag 14.9. This is this man's second discovery of a supernova in the galaxy M61, after SN 2006ov.
The supernova occurred at the position RA = 12:22:01.77, Dec = +04:28:47.5, or 102" E, 22" N of M61's nucleus, in the outskirts of that galaxy's eastern bright spiral arm. Two days later it was found at a maximal brightness of 14.3 mag, and from its spectrum, it was found to be of type II, i.e., hydrogen lines could be spotted; this indicates that it was a core collapse supernova of a young massive star.
