Deep very-long-exposure photograph of the Sombrero Galaxy M104, obtained byDavid Malin with the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This image shows a very extended halo, surrounding the galaxy. On the deep exposure, which reveals regions of very low surface brightness, M104 (or its halo) looks very much like a giant elliptical galaxy, disturbed by gravitational interaction with neighboring galaxies.
Two versions of this image are given: The first displays the negative of the deep image of the halo, superimposed by a small positive of the inner Sombrero galaxy, while the second image displays a positive of the halo, superimposed by the negative of the galaxy.
