Discovered by William Herschel in 1787.
William Herschel found this cluster on November 3, 1787 and cataloged it as H VIII.64. Due to unknown reasons, he mis-identified it with a cluster discovered by his sister Caroline in 1783 which ahe had listed as her No. 12; however, Caroline had seen another, nearby cluster, which is probablyNGC 189, according to Hoskin (2005).
