Futami Akisaburo (1895-1987)
Futami was chief of staff of 17 Army during the Guadalcanal campaign. He expressed misgivings about sending the Ichiki Detachment alone to retake the island, believing the Marinesnumbered around 8000, much higher than previous estimates but still far short of the mark. His subsequent retirement suggests he was either scapegoated for the failure of the campaign or his health failed in the awful conditions in the South Pacific, but he was called out of retirement to command 154 Divisionin Kyushu in the final months of the war.
