Harry Hill was a gunnery expert and planner whocommanded amphibioussupport forces under Spruance during the Central Pacific offensive. He commanded Southern Force at Tarawaduring the Gilbertscampaign and the invasions of Majuro, Eniwetok, and Tinian.
Morison describes Hill as an optimistic and friendly officer who seemed much younger than his years. Tuohy (2007) says he "combined gallantry, determination, expertise, and good cheer in equal measure." Turnergot along well with him and trusted him.
The claim that Hill boasted that his preinvasion bombardment would obliterate Tarawa may be a fabrication.
