Modifications U-195was converted to a supply submarine before being deployed to the Far East, by removing the torpedo armament to make room for 252 tons of fuel. She had a maximum speed of just 15.8 knots due to the use of less powerful machinery.

The IX-Ds were completed in 1942-45 and a number were allocated to the Indian Ocean, operating primarily out of Penang. They had excellent seakeeping and range, the latter quality being of particular value in the Indian Ocean.
