The Pacific War Online Encyclopedia: Kawano Chimaki (original) (raw)

Kawano Chimaki (Kono Chimaki according to some authors) commanded Submarine Squadron 6 when war broke out. In July 1942 he personally directed a submarine campaign against Allied shipping from command submarine I-11 in Bass Strait, north of Tasmania. This posed enough of a threat that it forced the Allies to resume convoy operations off Australia. However, the Japanese felt compelled to redeploy their submarines to meet the threat at Guadalcanal later in the year.
