Miami, Arizona (110.872W 33.394N) is the location of several copper mines, of which the most historically important was the Inspiration Mine. Production in the area was about 78,000 tons a year in 1941. The ore is in the form of porphyritic copper, Like many of the copper mining areas of the westernUnited States, Miami is located on the boundary between the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range geological provinces. This is an unstable geological zone with a history of intense plutonic and volcanic activity. The ore deposits are the result of hydrothermal processes associated with the Laramide orogeny (mountain-building) 40 to 60 million years ago.
