Gold and silver were discovered at Pioche (114.45W 37.935N) in 1863 and the resulting gold rush produced one of the most notorious mining towns of the old West. It is claimed that the first natural death in the town was its 72nd! "Murderer's Row" in the graveyard supposedly contains the remains of over 100 murderers. By 1900 the rich silver and gold veins were exhausted and the town was virtually a ghost town.
As is quite commonly the case, large deposits of lead and zinc were also present in the area, and production of these metals became significant during the 20's and 30's and soared during the war. Lead production was around 35,000 tons in 1940 and zinc production was near 37,000 tons.
