Sakai commanded 17 Division at Hsuchow in January 1943. His division was transferred to the Solomons in October 1943, and elements were deployed to Bougainville, New Britain, and New Guinea, where they formed the core of the defense against the Cape Gloucester invasion. By spring 1944 the remnants were back at Rabaul.
